Hilarious Things All Dancers Do that Seem Weird to Everyone Else

Hilarious Things All Dancers Do that Seem Weird to Everyone Else

Dancers are very much a group of individuals that see the world completely differently to everyone else. We have demonstrated this with some examples below as to how our brains work and why we may seem a little 'different' to others...

  1. Practicing your tap on any hard surface

You find yourself waiting for the kettle to boil and those feet just cant stand still. Stood by the greetings cards in the supermarket, totally engrossed in which card to get and there you go again, tapping your feet. It doesn't matter where you are, plus you don't care what other people think either so just tap away!

  1. Finding yourself in an arabesque every time you need to reach for something high up

Somehow it helps you to reach those extra couple of inches to the top shelf especially if you are a little vertically challenged to begin with. A loveley rise onto the demi pointe on the supporting leg whilst extending that working leg into your low arabesque!

  1. Counting your steps as you climb up and down the stairs

Every time you climb up you cant help but find yourself counting, even though you already know how many steps there are in your house or your office…still you count. Sometimes  you climb 2 stairs at a time so then you count up in 2,4,6 etc. and other times you climb one at a time so thats a simple 1,2,3 etc!

  1. You prefer sitting on the floor than on the sofa

I mean why not? Its easier to stretch, burst into spontaneous sit ups or practice strengthening exercises in front of the TV. The sofa isn’t all that more comfortable anyway, there is less space to spread out and it's not supportive!

  1. When you hear a great song and shout ‘Oh I LOVE this song!’

Don't get me wrong, lots of people say this, but when you say it, you follow up with, ‘I know a dance routine to this!’ then break out the moves regardless of where you are; in a club, in a shopping centre or a café!

  1. You count in ‘da, da, da’s’ and nobody other than another dancer has any clue what you are talking about

When you are practicing a routine and want to go over a step from a certain point, you say ‘ can we go from the ‘da, da ,dada, dum’ bit?’ and that isn’t at all weird, everyone just says yeah and carries on with practicing. It's the secret language of the  dancer!

  1. You have to walk in time and rhythm with whoever you are walking with

This can be pretty tricky if you are much shorter and your legs cant keep pace. You either find yourself taking stupidly long strides to stay in step or you walk at double speed to keep the rhythm. Either way, you end up looking a little odd, but you don't care, it's just not right otherwise!

  1. You can get into pretty much any tight spot

Whenever anything is dropped or lost behind or under some furniture, it is you that is called to squeeze and contort your bendy body to retrieve the item. Only you can see a space and visualise which position you need to get into. 'That looks like a perfect job for an arabesque penche, you can reach with your hands and counter your weight with your working leg, then easily recover to standing. Simple!'

We have had lots of fun creating our list but there are so many other things that only dancers do, that only dancers understand and also that only dancers appreciate. We will return to our list in a few weeks with another 8!

‹ go back
I have used Peter multiple times for supplying barres at our studio and we always receive fantastic products and exceptional customer service. Most recently he helped me with a time sensitive order and he went over and beyond to make sure everything came in on time. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him and his team. Many thanks Kind Regards Katie Geddes (Leeds)
